I Fear For The Future

Someone sent this to me to ask if it had any merit and I started crying.

http://forums.bakabt.com/index.php?topic=29848.msg4614235#msg4614235

To finish off, here is my TL for the line:
『役員を二人許り予想に飛ばして貰うわ』
“I would have [just/only] two executives fired as planned/expected/anticipated/forecasted.”

I pride myself on being a good translator and translation checker, not on having perfect grammar and stuff like that.

You might want to stop translating before you hurt someone, or at least get that pride checked.

  • No one writes ‘bakari’ with kanji.
  • “予想” is incorrect (See: Google).
  • 2人ばかり doesn’t mean “only two.” It means two or so. (See: Proof)
  • Your translation makes no sense.
  • You know, “tobashite moaru” just really means “to have fly (to be launched),” right? No, you probably don’t. So, the idea is that… You know what? Never mind.

I hate all of you.

Edit (to be fair):

Care Level: Low.  Turn off the subs for Madoka and try to translate it yourself.  If you can’t do it, I suggest not making comments, especially when you supposedly don’t have “context.”  Everyone else, stop sending me this crap.

He’s probably an intermediate-level student of the language. Knows just enough to be dangerous. His overuse of kanji is one such clue.

Beginner: no or too few kanji
    Intermediate: kanji EVERYWHERE
    Advanced: just right

The most common error I see in intermediates’ Japanese is one I was guilty of too (still am sometimes) and that’s writing grammatical components in kanji form rather than in their natural kana. For example, being able to know the difference between when to write という and when to write と言う is something which flies over an intermediate’s head and he’ll often just use the latter for both. Same thing happens all the time with -てみる, which you’ll often see the intermediate student write as -て見る because he wants to show off that he understands that this is the origin for the grammar form.

Hell, for the longest time I was writing これ as 之. It happens. Some of us love kanji; and for those of us who do, it’s inevitable that we’ll assume that “the more kanji, the truer the form and the closer it is to actual Japanese.” Even when native speakers look at us with furrowed eyebrows wondering JUST WHO THE HECK WRITES これ IN KANJI!? :)

As for ばかり’s meaning, man, that’s messy. Depending on the context, ばかり can EITHER mean “approximately, about” or it can mean “only, just”. See: 君ばかり見ているんだよ。 (“I’m looking just at you.”) Without the context in which this line was said, I’d hesitate to pick sides; but my gut instinct when hearing ANY numerical quantity attached to ばかり would be the “approximately” reading since that’s usually how it’s used with quantities.

    Anyway, cheers.

@Southrop: よそ and 予想 are two entirely different words.

  4. GRAvataer fromjp on May 14th, 2011 at 8:34 pm

I’m native Japanese and I assure his statement is incorrect.
No Japanese would interpret “よそ” as “予想”, this interpretation makes no sense.

I saw some other subs and concluded your subs are much much better than others. Keep up your good work, and don’t feel depressed.

  5. GRAvataer Southrop on May 15th, 2011 at 6:31 am

I know よそ and 予想 were different. I just assumed it was 予想 after my first listening and just translated that. That was a mistake on my part, I admit that.

  6. GRAvataer Southrop on May 15th, 2011 at 6:32 am

@Tal: it’s called pressing the space bar when using a Japanese IME. It automatically changes it to kanji.

  7. GRAvataer Tal on May 15th, 2011 at 9:35 am

@Southrop: it’s called knowing when not to do that.

We both know that when using an IME you hit the Enter key to accept text and to move on to the next chunk while you hit the spacebar only to cycle through the kanji options. The fact that you choose to do so when the case does not call for it betrays to everyone reading your posts that you think like an intermediate JSL student and not like a fluent speaker.

I expect you write things like 有難う御座います, 宜しく, and 分からなく成っちゃう as well. You really might want to cut that out. If you’re raging right now and any advice we’d have for you is going to fall on deaf ears, fine. But pick up some newspapers, comics, and light novels of your choosing and tally how many なっちゃうs you see vs. how many 成っちゃうs, etc.

  8. GRAvataer Southrop on May 15th, 2011 at 11:16 am

Wow, seriously? Because of one use of kanji, you assume I use kanji for everything now? I’ve never even used the kanji for the phrases you posted. I have used 夜露死苦 for yoroshiku tho ;D

  9. GRAvataer Yoo-jin on May 15th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Welp, the entire thread disappeared, it seems. At least, for me it did.

  10. GRAvataer Pokie-kun on May 15th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

@Yoo-jin: It works just fine for me.

  11. GRAvataer Edona on May 15th, 2011 at 5:03 pm

If there are people who loves to find mistakes in translations why don’t they start their own group.

They’re doing this for free, how ungrateful people can be and because I’m not native English maybe they’ll find mistakes on my post too.

Thank you yesy for all your hard work.

  12. GRAvataer Equil on May 15th, 2011 at 5:53 pm

    @Edona
No they shouldn’t! We would have trollsubs everywhere, not funny. Also you can always block idiots and note those who actually give good response, notice real mistakes if they are present. And for some people this is not ungratefulness, its the will to help make something good even better, there are also idiots as i mentioned earlier, but you can ignore them easily.

  13. GRAvataer rude on May 18th, 2011 at 3:22 am

Who gives a shit about this person.
It’s a horrible mod from BBT on it’s nitpicking high horse abusing his mod power. It’s not in any fan-subbing process for any group.

Unlike Dark_Sage who actually backs up his editorial nitpicking involving himself in the fan-subbing community you won’t see this prick doing any such thing.

As if anyone in those threads are actually going to do anything about what they’re discussing then bitch and nitpick, imply on this/that sentence – May go something like this: this groups translation on this sentence is wrong so they are out! based on this sentence alone! or warpsharping was used on their encode!1! but their translation is the best but that warpsharping hurts my eagle-eyes so they should be out!

Insert any other stupidly absurd minute details that goes on over at BakaBT to determine their deranged outlook of the best release. Keep the inconsistency going over there South.

Are we still talking about this fucking show?

  16. GRAvataer homu's lover on May 26th, 2011 at 5:57 pm

    Still doing the BDs?

  17. GRAvataer anon on June 14th, 2011 at 2:30 am

All I see at a bunch of faggots raging over accuracy while more worthy works go completely without translation. Southrop, contribute something other than questioning the works of others. Otherwise, fuck off, cocksucker.

  18. GRAvataer rude on June 24th, 2011 at 1:48 pm

    Congratulations yesy!
Duki3003 & the rest of BakaBT staff has decided to take your version of Madoka in the B-slot.

All this aside, any chance of you doing Penguindrum? Right now the only two options are gg and nutbladder.

    And that’s just tragic.

Reinweiss is going through gg and correcting name order and restoring honorifics but missed a few. And I just want a yesy release.

  20. GRAvataer jrdp_18 on July 21st, 2011 at 9:09 pm

Are you still gonna do [ts] of episodes 8-10?

  21. GRAvataer zoah on August 12th, 2011 at 9:04 pm

Fuck the haters, even if you make a dumb translation error…YOU’RE FUCKING HUMAN.

I agree with you totally, lets see those asshats take the time and effort to do the work.

Dont let them win..keep up the good work

  22. GRAvataer Otto on October 16th, 2011 at 8:09 pm

Hey guys. So I’m noticing BD batches starting to appear on TT. Are you planning to do a BD release or should I just grab this [Zaockle-Tormaid] thing, whoever the fuck they are?

Thanks for all your hard work.
